Syndromic surveillance summary: 14 December 2025 week 50

During week 50, acute respiratory infection (ARI) indicators decreased nationally across all age groups in the remote health advice (NHS 111) and emergency department (ED) systems. GP out-of-hours contacts for ARI stabilised overall, with decreases in age groups between 1 to 44, but continued increases in the under 1’s and age groups over 45 years. ED attendances for influenza-like illness (ILI) decreased or remained stable across all age groups but decreased particularly in children aged 5 to 14 years. GP in-hours consultation rates for ILI continued to increase, with rates overall remaining above expected levels for the time of year.
Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system
During week 50, the number of NHS 111 ARI triaged calls and online assessments stabilised overall with no further increases observed. ARI calls and assessments decreased in children but remained stable in adults aged 15 years and older during the reporting week. Vomiting calls decreased slightly during week 50. Calls stabilised in the under 1 years age group and decreased in children aged 1 to 4 years.

GP in-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 50 GP in-hours consultation rates for both upper and lower respiratory tract infections stabilised nationally, particularly in children aged up to 15 years, although rates continued to increase in the adult age groups (45 years and over). Consultation rates for ILI continued to increase, with rates overall remaining above expected levels for the time of year. Consultations for vomiting continued to increase, particularly in children aged 1 to 4 and 5 to 14 years.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 50, GP out-of-hours daily contacts for ILI increased nationally and are above levels expected for this time of year. The increase was seen in all age groups except the 5 to 14 years. Contacts for ARI stabilised overall, with decreases in age groups between 1 to 44, but continued increases in the under 1’s and ages over 45. Other syndromes were either stable or decreased over the past week.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system
During week 50, attendances for ARI decreased nationally but remained above seasonally expected levels. Decreases were observed across all age groups. Attendances for ILI illness also began to decrease nationally but remained above seasonally expected levels. Attendances for ILI decreased or remained stable across all age groups but decreased particularly in children aged 5 to 14 years. Attendances for acute bronchiolitis or bronchitis decreased slightly during week 50 and remained below seasonally expected levels. Attendances for pneumonia decreased and were below levels expected for the time of year.

During week 50, daily ambulance dispatch calls for difficulty breathing were stable and similar to levels expected at the time of year.
