During week 32, syndromic ‘impact of heat’-type indicators increased during the weekend of 9 and 10 August. There was a continued small increase in COVID-19-like emergency department (ED) attendances and GP in-hours consultations, particularly in adults.
Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system
NHS 111-triaged calls and online assessments for heat exposure or sunburn increased at the end of week 32 (Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 August), in line with warm weather across England. The previously decreasing trend in NHS 111-triaged calls and online assessments for diarrhoea ended, with a slight increase seen across the week.

GP in-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 32 there was a continued slight increase in COVID-19-like GP consultations nationally, particularly in adults aged 65 years and over. Other respiratory indicators were stable or decreased and similar or below seasonally expected levels.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 32, GP out-of-hours daily contacts for gastroenteritis and diarrhoea increased. Daily contacts for fever also increased.
Please note: trends for week 32 should be interpreted with caution. We are investigating a potential change in coding practice by one GP out-of-hours service provider during week 32 which may have impacted on national trends, causing small increases in some syndromic indicators.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system
During week 32, COVID-19-like ED attendances continued to increase, particularly among adults aged 45 to 64. Single-day increases in attendances for gastroenteritis and heat or sunstroke were observed on Sunday 10 August.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system
During week 32, daily ambulance calls for ‘impact of heat or cold’ increased, particularly during the weekend, 9 and 10 August, in line with the recent warmer weather across England. There were also increases throughout the week in calls for headache, allergic reactions and injuries.
