Syndromic surveillance summary: 29 February 2024 week 8

Reporting week 8: 19 February to 25 February.

During week 8, there were further decreases observed across respiratory syndromic indicators, although GP in-hours and ED pneumonia indicators increased or remained stable, respectively, and remain above seasonally expected levels. GP in-hours consultations for measles and whooping cough remained stable overall during week 8, however both are above seasonally expected levels.

Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system

During week 8, NHS 111 respiratory syndromic indicators (including cold/flu, cough, difficulty breathing and ‘potential COVID-19’) continued to decrease for both NHS 111 calls and online assessments. Gastroenteritis indicators decreased or remained stable during week 8.

GP in hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 8, GP in-hours consultations for COVID-19-like, influenza-like illness and upper and lower respiratory tract infections continued to decrease. However, pneumonia consultations increased slightly and remained above seasonally expected levels. Measles and whooping cough consultations were stable during week 8 but remained above baseline levels.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 8, GP out-of-hours daily contacts for acute respiratory infections decreased and are now at expected levels. There was an increase in influenza-like illness that was particularly observed in adults aged 65 years and older.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system

During week 8, ED attendances for acute respiratory infections and influenza-like illness continued to decrease but they remain above seasonally expected levels. COVID-19-like attendances continued to decrease. Attendances for pneumonia were stable, however they remain at above seasonally expected levels. Overall, scarlet fever attendances decreased during week 8 however there was an increase observed during the weekend of 24 to 25 February.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

During week 8, daily ambulance calls for difficulty breathing decreased but remain at above seasonally expected levels.
