Syndromic surveillance summary: 19 January 2023 week 2

During week 2, emergency department (ED) attendances and GP consultation rates for influenza-like illness decreased further nationally across all age groups. There were also further decreases in COVID-19-like indicators. ED attendances and GP consultation rates for scarlet fever stabilised during week 2 but activity remains above seasonally expected levels.

Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system

During week 2, total NHS 111 calls and NHS 111 online assessments continued to decrease, with decreases observed across most syndromic indicators including cold and flu, sore throat and COVID-19-like. Decreases have been largely observed in adult age groups while calls and online assessments in children have stabilised.

GP in-hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 2, GP in-hours consultation rates for influenza-like illness and upper and lower respiratory tract infections continued to decrease, particularly in adults, and are now at or approaching seasonally expected levels. There were also further decreases in COVID-19-like consultations. Scarlet fever consultations stabilised during week 2, however they remain above seasonally expected levels.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system

Daily GP out-of-hours contact data from 4 August 2022 onwards has not been received due to a widely publicised disruption faced by one of the GP out-of-hours clinical software system providers. We have since been informed that this disruption was as a result of a cybersecurity incident caused by ransomware. We are working closely with our data provider to restore the daily syndromic feed.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system

During week 2, ED attendances for acute respiratory infections and influenza-like illness continued to decrease across all age groups, remaining elevated but approaching seasonally expected levels. There was also a decrease observed in COVID-19-like attendances. ED attendances for scarlet fever were stable during week 2 but levels remain above those expected for the time of year.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

During week 2, ambulance calls for difficulty breathing, ‘cardiac or respiratory arrest’ and chest pain continued to decrease.
