Syndromic surveillance summary: 1 June 2023 week 21

During week 21, there were small increases in seasonal syndromic indicators including allergic rhinitis (hay fever), insect bites and ‘impact of heat’ in line with seasonally expected levels.

Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system

During week 21 there were increases in NHS 111 calls and online assessments over the public holiday weekend, in line with expected activity (trends presented in this report should therefore be interpreted with some caution). NHS 111 calls and online assessments for ‘insect bites’ and ‘heat exposure or sunburn’ increased in line with seasonal expectations.

GP in hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 21, there were continued increases in seasonal conditions including allergic rhinitis and insect bites consultations, in line with seasonally expected activity. GP in-hours consultations for all respiratory indicators remained stable during week 21.

GP out of hours syndromic surveillance system

Daily GP out-of-hours contact data from 4 August 2022 onwards has not been received due to a widely publicised disruption faced by one of the GP out-of-hours clinical software system providers. We have since been informed that this disruption was as a result of a cybersecurity incident caused by ransomware. We are working closely with our data provider to restore the daily syndromic feed.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system

There were increases in emergency department (ED) attendances for gastroenteritis during week 21 however attendances remain below expected levels. There were small increases in ‘heat or sunstroke’ attendances, but numbers remain low and within limits expected for the time of year. There were further decreases in COVID-19-like ED attendances during week 21.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

Daily ambulance calls for allergic reactions and injuries increased during week 21. Overall, allergic reactions remain in line with baseline while injuries are above expected levels.
