Syndromic surveillance summary: 5 May 2022 week 17

During week 17, coronavirus (COVID-19)-like and other respiratory indicators continued to decrease. Selected gastroenteritis indicators remained stable but there were some increases in children aged 5 to 14 years.

Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system

During week 17, NHS 111 calls and online assessments for ‘potential COVID-19’ continued to decrease nationally and across all age groups. Nationally respiratory indicators decreased or remained stable; gastrointestinal indicators also remained stable. Please note that week 17 includes a bank holiday weekend when NHS 111 call and online assessment numbers are traditionally higher thereby making assessment of recent trend difficult.

GP in hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 17, COVID-19-like and other respiratory indicators decreased or remained stable and are at or below expected levels. Overall, consultations for gastroenteritis, diarrhoea and vomiting remained stable or decreased during week 17.

GP out of hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 17 GP out-of-hours contacts for respiratory indicators either decreased or remained stable. Gastroenteritis contacts (including diarrhoea and vomiting) remained stable overall, however increases were noted in children aged 5 to14 years. Please note that week 17 includes a bank holiday weekend when GP out-of-hours contacts are traditionally higher thereby making assessment of recent trend difficult.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system

During week 17, emergency department COVID-19-like attendances continued to decrease across all age groups and regions. Gastroenteritis attendances were stable during week 17 however attendances remain elevated in children aged 5 to 14 years.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

Nationally, COVID-19-like and difficulty breathing calls continued to decrease during week 17.
