Syndromic surveillance summary: 17 February 2022 week 6

During week 6, there were further increases in selected syndromic gastroenteritis and vomiting indicators in children, however, overall activity remained within seasonally expected levels.

Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system

During week 6, NHS 111 calls and online assessments for diarrhoea and vomiting continued to increase nationally, with increases particularly noted in children. ‘Potential COVID-19’ calls and online assessments continued to decrease nationally.

GP in hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 6, there was a small increase in GP consultation rates for pharyngitis and scarlet fever, particularly in children aged 1 to 4 and 5 to 14 years, but rates remained below seasonally expected levels. There were further small increases in diarrhoea and vomiting consultations noted in children aged less than 15 years.

GP out of hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 6, GP out of hours contacts for gastroenteritis and vomiting continued to increase in children aged 1 to 4 and 5 to 14 years. Acute respiratory infection and influenza-like illness contacts remained stable and below seasonally expected levels.

Emergency department (ED) syndromic surveillance system

During week 6, COVID-19-like ED attendances continued to decrease nationally and across all age groups. ED attendances for gastroenteritis continued to increase, particularly in children aged 1 to 4 and 5 to 14 years.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

COVID-19-like ambulance calls decreased during week 6. Difficulty breathing calls remained stable and below expected levels.
