Syndromic surveillance summary: 13 January 2022 week 1

During week 1, COVID-19-like emergency department (ED) attendances and NHS 111 calls and online assessments for ‘potential COVID-19’ decreased across all age groups and regions. Other acute respiratory infections decreased and influenza-like illness syndromic indicators remained stable.

Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system

During week 1, NHS 111 calls and online assessments for ‘potential COVID-19’ decreased across all age groups and regions. There were also decreases in calls and assessments for a range of other respiratory indicators including cold or flu, cough and sore throat.

GP in hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 1, GP consultation rates for COVID-19-like illness increased slightly. Lower respiratory tract infection rates increased in the over 65 years age group.

GP out of hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 1, GP out-of-hours contacts for acute respiratory infection decreased while influenza-like illness contacts remained stable but below seasonally expected levels. Contacts for chest pain increased, particularly in adults aged 15 to 64.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system

During week 1, COVID-19-like ED attendances decreased across all age groups and regions. Acute respiratory infection attendances also decreased while influenza-like illness attendances remained stable but below seasonally expected levels.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

During week 1, COVID-19-like ambulance syndromic calls decreased. Calls for impact of heat or cold increased above baseline.
