Syndromic surveillance summary: 12 May 2022 week 18

During week 18, there were small increases observed in selected acute respiratory indicators in children aged 5 to 14 years. Overall, while gastroenteritis indicators remain stable across the syndromic systems, further increases were noted in children aged 5 to 14 years.

Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system

During week 18, NHS 111 calls for sore throat increased in children aged 5 to 14 years. Diarrhoea and vomiting calls and online assessments remained at elevated levels in children aged 5 to 14 years.

GP in hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 18, daily GP in-hours consultations for gastroenteritis and diarrhoea increased in children aged 5 to 14 years.

GP out of hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 18, GP out-of-hours contacts for gastroenteritis, diarrhoea and vomiting remained at seasonally expected levels, however, increases were noted in children aged 5 to 14 years. There was also an increase in acute pharyngitis contacts in the 5 to 14 years age group.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system

During week 18, emergency department COVID-19-like attendances continued to decrease across all age groups and regions. There were small increases in acute respiratory infection and asthma attendances, particularly in children aged 1 to 4 and 5 to 14 years. Attendances for gastroenteritis remained at elevated levels in children aged 5 to 14 years.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

COVID-19-like calls continued to decrease during week 18. There was a small increase in difficulty breathing calls, however, the overall trend remained stable and below seasonally expected levels.
