Syndromic surveillance summary: 9 December 2021 week 48

During week 48, there were further increases in NHS 111 eye problems calls and GP in-hours consultations for conjunctivitis in children under 5 years of age.

Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system

During week 48, NHS 111 eye problems calls continued to increase in children aged under 5 years. NHS 111 calls and online assessments for diarrhoea and vomiting increased in children aged 5 to 14 years.

GP in hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 48, GP consultation rates for lower respiratory infections increased particularly in adults aged over 45 years. Consultation rates for conjunctivitis continued to increase, with marked increases particularly noted in children aged 1 to 4 years. Consultations for diarrhoea and vomiting are increasing in children aged 1 to 4 and 5 to 14 years.

GP out of hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 48, GP out-of-hours contacts across a number of syndromic respiratory indicators remained stable and at or below seasonally expected levels nationally.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system

During week 48, ED attendances for respiratory indicators decreased or remained stable. Attendances for ‘impact of cold’ returned to expected levels after increases noted in line with level 3 cold weather alerts, particularly noted in adults and North England.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

During week 48, ambulance calls for ‘impact of heat or cold’ returned to expected levels after increasing during the weekend of 27 and 28 November in line with the level 3 cold weather alert in place across parts of England.
