Syndromic surveillance summary: 7 October 2021 week 39

During week 39, respiratory indicators increased across all systems.

Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system

During week 39, NHS 111 calls and online assessments for respiratory indicators continued to increase, with NHS 111 calls for cold or flu, cough and difficulty breathing all above expected levels, with further increases in adults aged 15 to 44 years.

‘Potential COVID-19’ calls and online assessments also increased nationally, particularly in adults 15 to 44 years.

GP in hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 39, GP consultations for lower and upper respiratory tract infections continued to increase. Consultations for chickenpox also increased, mainly in children 1 to 4 years, and are just above seasonally expected levels.

GP out of hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 39, GP out-of-hours contacts for respiratory indicators continued to increase, particularly in young children.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system

During week 39, emergency department (ED) attendances for acute respiratory infections continue to increase in the under 1 and 15 to 44 years age groups. Influenza-like-illness is also increasing in the 15 to 44 years age group.

ED attendances for acute bronchiolitis have stabilised nationally and in the under 1 year age group and are decreasing in the 1 to 4 years age group.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

During week 39, ambulance COVID-19-like calls increased.
