Syndromic surveillance summary: 28 October 2021 week 42

During week 42, across all systems most respiratory indicators were stable or decreased although increases were seen in adults over 44 years.

Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system

During week 42, NHS 111 calls for respiratory indicators were stable or decreasing, although NHS 111 calls for cold/flu increased for adults over 44 years and in the North West. NHS 111 calls and online assessments for potential COVID-19 and cough also increased in adults over 44 years.

GP in hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 42, GP consultation rates for COVID-19-like increased slightly, particularly in school-aged children and adults over 44 years. Consultation rates for both upper and lower respiratory tract infections remained stable and below baseline levels but increased in adults over 44 years. Consultation rates for diarrhoea increased in infants, whilst consultation rates for gastroenteritis stabilised and remained similar to baseline levels.

GP out of hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 42, GP out-of-hours contacts for respiratory syndromes were stable or decreasing.

Emergency department (ED) syndromic surveillance system

During week 42, ED attendances in total decreased, as is usually seen during school holiday periods. All indicators have stabilised or decreased during the most recent week.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

During week 42, COVID-19-like calls increased. Calls for cardiac or respiratory arrest increased slightly and remained above expected levels for the time of year.
