Syndromic surveillance summary: 21 October 2021 week 41

During week 41, respiratory indicators continued to increase across all systems particularly in children and young adults.

Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system

During week 41, NHS 111 calls for respiratory indicators continued to increase, particularly cold and flu, cough and sore throat, whereas NHS 111 online assessments for respiratory indicators stabilised. Calls for diarrhoea and vomiting increased this week, particularly in young children.

GP in hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 41, GP consultation rates for both upper and lower respiratory tract infections stabilised, remaining below baseline levels. Consultation rates for gastroenteritis continue to increase, particularly in children, though are at baseline levels.

GP out of hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 41, GP out-of-hours contacts for acute respiratory infection continued to increase, particularly in older adults (45 to 64 years) and remained elevated in younger age groups.

Emergency department (ED) syndromic surveillance system

During week 41, ED attendances for acute respiratory infections continued to increase nationally, though has stabilised in adults 15 to 44 years. Acute bronchiolitis and bronchitis attendances increased further, particularly in children under 1 year.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

During week 41, COVID-19-like calls were stable. Calls for cardiac or respiratory arrest remained above expected levels for the time of year.
