This work represents ongoing engagement with STATS19 data providers and analysts, to understand how the data are collected to inform guidance to users of the results.
Phase 1 looked at the general collection of STATS19 data. This work suggested that most forces provide some training and quality assurance of STATS19 data, though there are variations in organisation and practices across the country. While existing DfT documentation (such as STATS20) is relatively well-used, there remains scope for further guidance.
Phase 2 looked specifically at the recording of road safety factors, in order to explore reasons for changes in the use of some types of factor compared to the previous system of contributory factors. This suggest a range of potential reasons, without providing definitive explanations.
Phase 3 is planned for the year to March 2027 (and for publication during 2027), and will look at the recording of injury severity across different police force areas.
Overall, this work has identified a number of areas where the department might take action to support further continuous improvement in the collection of STATS19 data, which will be considered alongside other priorities.
