1. Request

Can the Department for Education disclose figures of the past ten years for:

  1. The total number of people employed by the organisation.

  2. The total number of people to leave the organisation.

  3. The number of people dismissed.

  4. The reasons for dismissal, by group (capability, conduct, made redundant, or other substantial reason).

  5. The number of people who resigned.

  6. The number of people who retired early.

2. Release

For parts 1 and 2 of the request, published information can be found in the Civil Service tables on the Office of National Statistics website. Information achieved before 2006, can be found on the Civil Service website.

For parts 3 and 4 of the request, the number of staff dismissals was 45. A breakdown of this information, set out in the table below, is only available from 2003.

Specific information under capability, conduct and attendance (as the other substantial reason), is only represented where the ‘reasons for leaving’ option has been filled.

The table also includes information on resignations (part 5 of the request) and early releases and retirements (covering part 4, third bullet and part 6 of the request) which are combined here as they are on our systems.

No employees have been made redundant over the period but targeted voluntary early release schemes (under the terms set out in the Civil Service Compensation Scheme) have been one of the tools used to reduce headcount.
