FOI release

Staff and budget for police and crime commissioners

Published 10 December 2012

We have received a request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 for the following:

I would like to know how many would be in the team of the commissioner’s office, as I presume he would not be on his own. I would presume he would have an office staff along with a office plus transport and other expenses, what I would like to know is the total amount of money that would be allocated to this position.

We released the following information on: 03 December 2012

Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) will be required to appoint a chief executive and a chief finance officer.  The chief executive will act as monitoring officer for the PCC.  The chief finance officer will be responsible for advising the PCC about their financial obligations and the impact of their spending decisions. The PCC may appoint other staff, but all employees will be politically restricted and appointed on merit, except the deputy PCC (if the PCC chooses to appoint one).

The PCC will be required to publish organisational charts and salaries of all staff.

The PCC will publish annual financial accounts, including showing how resources were consumed in respect of priorities and how value for money was secured.

The government does not expect the running costs and day to day expenditure of PCCs to be any greater than that of existing police authorities, which is currently less than 1 per cent of the total cost of policing.
