Primary assessment

Action: academies and free schools - confirm your monitoring and moderation arrangements by 20 November

If you are an academy or free school, your funding agreement requires you to comply with statutory moderation and monitoring requirements for end of key stage national curriculum assessments. This includes moderation of teacher assessment (TA) and external monitoring of national curriculum tests.

You must have provision in place for:

For KS2 test monitoring, you may choose your geographical local authority (LA), another LA or the STA. For phonics screening check monitoring you may only choose your geographical LA or another LA.

For teacher assessment moderation, you may only choose your geographical LA or another LA. EYFS profile moderation is a separate arrangement. It must be completed by your geographical LA.

If you’re intending to use the same provider(s) as last year, you will still need to get their agreement, but you do not need to inform us.

Academies formed on or before 1 September 2016 who are changing their arrangements

You must tell us which provider(s) you have an agreement with to:

  • monitor your phonics screening check administration
  • moderate your KS1 TA
  • monitor your KS2 test administration
  • moderate your KS2 writing TA

Once you have an agreement in place with your chosen provider(s), please complete our short online form to confirm your arrangements.

Please complete the form by Friday 20 November. If you don’t, STA will assume that you have an agreement with the LA you used for the 2015 to 2016 assessment cycle.

Academies formed after 1 September 2016

If your school became an academy after this date, you don’t need to take any further action. Your geographical LA will undertake your monitoring and moderation for 2016 to 2017.
