Applies to England

The Environment Agency has received an application to vary an environmental permit under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010 from The Coal Authority.

  • Application number: EPR/EP3622XS/V002
  • Regulated facility type: Whitburn Mine Water Discharge
  • Regulated facility location: The Former Whitburn Colliery at Whitburn Coastal Park, Mill Lane, Whitburn, SR6 7NH.
  • NGR discharge point: NZ 41092 63898
  • Receiving environment: North Sea
  • Effluent type: Trade effluent comprising of mine waters
  • Volume: 2,592 cubic metres per day

This scheme is required to control rising mine waters within the Westoe to Wearmouth mining block. If allowed to continue to rise these mine waters have the potential to pollute an overlying groundwater body. This application is to vary an existing permit to discharge mine water to the North Sea. The original permit was for a temporary discharge of mine water during a pump test, this variation is to make the discharge permanent and to increase the permitted load of total iron to 300 kilograms per day.

The Environment Agency and the Coal Authority will be holding a drop in session where you can find out more information about this scheme. This will be held on;

• Thursday 17th July 1:30pm to 7:00pm at Whitburn Library, Mill Lane, Whitburn, SR6 7EN.
