Details of the application

Southern Water Services Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is to vary licence serial number 02/114, which authorises the abstraction of water from surface water at National Grid References TQ 71 38, TQ 69 50, TQ 75 57 and TQ 68 34 in Kent.

The variation applied for is summarised as follows:

  • i) Split the release of water from Bewl Reservoir to the downstream River Bewl to between the downstream river and a pipeline to the River Teise at Smallbridge.
  • ii) Alter wording for the release of water from Bewl Reservoir and abstraction at Springfield to be consistent with a one day travel time for releases from the Reservoir to Springfield. Therefore any abstraction at Springfield today (09:00 today to 09:00 tomorrow) is supported by sufficient release from Bewl Reservoir yesterday (09:00 yesterday to 09:00 today) subject to river conditions at 09:00 today.
  • iii) Reduce the required number of water quality monitoring stations from seven to five, recognising the fifth will not be operating until after the new intake eel screen is established at Springfield.
  • iv) Generally tighten technical terminology and its consistent application throughout the licence.
  • v) Reduction in total annual abstraction quantity, at National Grid Reference TQ 75 57, from 37,700,000 cubic metres per year to 30,500,000 cubic metres per year.

No changes are proposed to any other conditions and obligations within the licence.
