Peatlands cover just 3% of the world’s surface but store as much carbon as all of the world’s vegetation. But if peatlands degrade, this carbon store is transformed into a vast source of carbon emissions.
SIN Chile supported a visit from Professor Andrew Millar, Scotland’s Chief Scientific Advisor for Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture that has led to a lasting partnership in peatland conservation.
The UK and Chile shared their strategies at COP25 and in 2020, Chile has for the first time included peatlands as part of their nationally determined contribution (NDC) strategy to lower carbon emissions.
