Expanding the number of uniform suppliers so it is more affordable.

Provision of free transport to test venues for the most disadvantaged children as well as free transport to attend outreach activities.

A free summer school for pupil premium children between year 6 and when they join the school, specifically focused on literacy and numeracy.

To break down barriers and to encourage parents and children to consider the school as an option the school will:

  • provide new information sessions for parents of year 4 and 5 pupils to find out more about the school, sessions will also be held at Abraham Darby Academy, a school with a large number of pupil premium children on roll
  • offer the selection test at Abraham Darby School to target more disadvantaged children
  • send Haberdasher Adams’ School’s pupils eligible for the pupil premium and sixth formers to target schools to deliver assemblies, explain the benefits of selective education, encourage applications and explain the admissions process
  • set up a help desk at parents’ evenings at target schools to encourage more disadvantaged families to apply
  • provide help points in places such as libraries and nurseries in the local community
  • deliver tailored tours of the school for the staff of primary schools within the attendance (‘catchment’) area
  • produce a guidance pack of entrance test familiarisation materials for parents
  • hold outreach activities both during the week and at weekends that are open to all but free to pupil premium children, for example, cycling proficiency sessions and reading treasure hunts
  • host community sports events including primary school sports days and inter-school competitions to widen awareness of the school more generally - this is not specifically targeted at children eligible for the pupil premium but will involve some schools with higher numbers of pupil premium children on role

Current and continuing activities

Six sessions for pupil premium children (on each theme) in partner schools on resilience and team building aiming to address issues of aspiration and self-confidence.

Currently, children from partner schools come to Haberdasher Adams’ School to use science labs, sports facilities, art rooms for lessons and outside play areas. This helps to raise aspirations for the pupils, through seeing the school ‘in real life’. This will extend to new partner schools in disadvantaged areas.

Sixth form mentors from Haberdasher Adams’ School go into the 8 current outreach partner primary schools to assist with literacy and numeracy. This not only improves literacy and numeracy but will help enable disadvantaged high-ability children in the target primary schools to be more confident in taking the selection test.

To improve access for such children, Haberdasher Adams’ School will also continue to subsidise uniforms, trips, music lessons, and other things for the most disadvantaged pupils.

Partnership

The school will raise standards through greater support for children and teachers attending and working in the outreach partner schools.

Current and continuing activity

The delivery of literacy and numeracy sessions at the schools named in the outreach section as well as 2 local secondary schools:

  • Abraham Darby Academy
  • Burton Borough School

The aim is to work in partnership to improve standards and address identified needs. The sessions will be delivered termly by a mixture of sixth form mentors plus the opportunity for Haberdasher Adams’ School’s staff to deliver continuous professional development sessions at the schools.

Science, arts, drama and sport curricular support for partner schools and pupil premium children attending these schools. This also involves the use of Haberdasher Adams’ School’s science, sport and music facilities to provide partner schools with the tools and facilities to help raise standards.

New activities

An annual networking event for governors to foster a shared purpose and share best practice.

Curricular support in art for partner schools and pupil premium children attending these schools.
