Details of the application

Sam Frankland and Roger Frankland trading as The Frankland Family has applied to the Environment Agency for two licences.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The applications are for:

  1. A licence to obstruct or impede the flow of Needlehouse Gill at Ravenstonedale, Cumbria at National Grid Reference (NGR) SD 73283 96985. The impounding works are to facilitate the abstraction of water for hydroelectric power production.

  2. A full licence to abstract water from Needlehouse Gill at Ravenstonedale, Cumbria at NGR SD 73283 96985.

The proposal is to abstract water at the following rates and period:

  • 144 cubic metres an hour
  • 3,456 cubic metres a day
  • 760,320 cubic metres a year
  • At an instantaneous rate not exceeding 40 litres per second
  • between 1 April and 31 March inclusive in each year.

The water will be returned to Needlehouse Gill at NGR SD 72871 96814.

The proposal includes the provision of a minimum prescribed flow to maintain the ecology within the deprived river channel. The intake to the turbine will include a 1 millimetre Coanda type fish screen combined with a bar type fish screen at the outfall. The proposal is located within the Lune Abstraction Licensing Strategy reporting area.
