Details of the application

Royal Borough of Greenwich Council has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a full licence to abstract water from an underground strata comprising of chalk at National Grid Reference TQ 38831 78015, Greenwich, London. Water will be returned after use to the same groundwater aquifer at NGR TQ 38783 78089, Greenwich, London.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

  • 55 cubic metres an hour
  • 1,320 cubic metres a day
  • 258,777 cubic metres a year
  • At an instantaneous rate of 15.2 litres per second
  • between 1 April and 31 March inclusive in each year.

The water will be used for a ground source heat pump (heating only). The abstraction lies within the Thames Corridor Abstraction Licensing Strategy.
