Details of the application

Roxane UK Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a full licence to abstract water from Woburn Sands (Lower Greensands) at Butterfield Business Park, Luton, National Grid Reference TL 10422 24872.

The application is to abstract water all year as follows:

  • 120 cubic metres an hour
  • 2,880 cubic metres a day
  • 848,448 cubic metres a year

The water will be used for the purpose of water bottling.

The abstracted water would come from a confined aquifer, meaning that the effects on rivers and wetlands could be experienced further to the north, in the area from Milton Keynes to Biggleswade. There is also the potential to affect existing abstractions from the lower greensand aquifer nearer to the point of abstraction.
