Home Office Research Report 66 reviews the implementation of the police single non-emergency number (101). It also examines public perceptions of how non-emergency incidents are dealt with by the police.
The research involved interviews with staff responsible for the implementation of 101 and individuals who had used the 101 service. These were supplemented with focus groups with members of the public to understand wider attitudes to contacting the police.
The report finds that the 101 service was operating as intended in the first forces to implement it and that users were largely satisfied. However a section of the public have misconceptions regarding 101 calls which may discourage use of this service. The report recommends a number of steps to address these misconceptions.
