The Environment Agency, in partnership with Anglian Water Services Limited and the Wild Trout Trust, are proposing to trial a lower minimum required river flow (the quantity of water passing through the river each day) in the River Gwash (a tributary of the River Welland) downstream of Rutland Water reservoir, during operation of the River Gwash to River Glen transfer.

The Environment Agency is giving notice in line with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The River Gwash is located at National Grid Reference (NGR) TF 03770 09720, north of Stamford.

Over the next five years this project will trial a lower minimum required river flow at Belmesthorpe gauging station when operating the Gwash to Glen transfer. During this time the Environment Agency will reduce the minimum required flow from 27,000 cubic metres a day to 21,600 cubic metres a day. The flow will be reduced by releasing less water from Rutland Water into the river.

Licensed abstractors on this stretch of river have been notified.

Throughout the year Anglian Water Services Limited release a statutory amount of water from Rutland Water into the River Gwash; this will remain unchanged during the trial.

The intention of the trial is to improve the water management, ecology and fisheries of the River Gwash. The Environment Agency will monitor the River Gwash throughout the trial.
