This direction has closed and a direction issued by the Department for Education (DfE) on 11 June 2025 replaces it.

This revised direction requires the council to continue taking steps to improve its children’s social care services, including co-operating with the DfE-appointed Children’s Services Commissioner, Matt Dunkley CBE.

It follows a report by Ofsted that judged the overall effectiveness of the council’s children’s social care services to be inadequate.

This direction replaces the earlier statutory direction issued to the council in May 2021.
