Template letter to request oxygen therapy in Spain

List of Spanish authorities

Details

This information and letter template was previously published on the Healthcare in Spain website. The process for requesting oxygen therapy during a visit to Spain has not changed.

If you need to receive oxygen therapy during a temporary visit to Spain, you must request it in advance from the Spanish authorities. To make this request, send a completed template letter by email or fax to the relevant Spanish authority at least one month before you are due to travel, along with:

  • an enlarged copy of your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
  • a clear photocopy of the photo page of your passport
  • a letter or prescription from your GP or specialist giving full details of your oxygen requirements

Once you’ve sent the oxygen request, you should then follow up with the relevant authority to confirm that your request has been processed, though many authorities will process your order without it being confirmed.

Visiting Spain after Brexit

The UK and Spain have each taken steps to ensure that people living in each country can continue to access healthcare as they do now until at least 31 December 2020. This means UK-issued EHIC holders in Spain will also be able to continue to access healthcare in the same way until at least 31 December 2020.

An EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance and you should have both when you travel abroad. Check your insurance has the necessary emergency healthcare cover so that you can get any treatment you might need.

If you have any pre-existing health conditions, talk to your GP and insurer about how to get the right cover and how this affects your travel.
