Representation of the People Bill 2026: Anonymous electors
If the safety of an individual, or someone in their household, would be at risk if their details were published on the electoral register, they can choose to register to vote anonymously. This is vitally important in keeping vulnerable people, such as survivors of domestic violence, safe while also ensuring they can participate in our democratic system.
However, currently anonymous registration only lasts for one year, so anonymous electors must reapply annually to remain on the register. This places an unnecessary burden upon these electors.
Summary of measures in the Bill
Reducing the burden on anonymous voters
The Elections Bill will contain provisions which extend the length of the anonymity period from one year, to three years, meaning anonymous electors no longer have to reapply annually.
