Background information

This indicator monitors the reliability of journeys made on Highways England’s motorway and A road network.

The indicator is measured by the percentage of ‘journeys’ on these roads that are ‘on time’. For this measure:

  • a ‘journey’ represents travel between adjacent junctions on the network
  • an ‘on time journey’ is defined as one which is completed within a set reference time, drawn from historic data on that particular section of road
  • reference journey times are updated for the April data each year, further information on the impact of updating reference times can be found in the latest statistical release

As set out in our latest release of the reliability statistics, we are planning to change the method we use to calculate reliability on Highways England roads for April 2015 data onwards, as part of a wider package of changes. As a result, there will be no further updates to the statistical series for the current reliability measure after the final March 2015 statistics. Reliability statistics using the new methodology are expected to be published from August 2015.

  • publishing schedule: monthly
  • last updated: 11 June 2015
  • next update: August 2015 (using the new reliability statistics methodology)
