Published 12 October 2020
When
Monday 14 December 2020 to Friday 8 January 2021.
Where
Clifton reach, between Clifton and Culham Locks.
Details
The river between Clifton and Culham Locks will be closed to all boat traffic from Monday 14 December 2020 to Friday 8 January 2021.
This is to allow the refurbishment of the Sutton Courtenay flow gauge. The current equipment has reached the end of its operational life. We need to excavate a trench in the river bed in order to lay new cables across the river to bring the flow gauge back into service. Once the trench has been excavated, divers will lay the cable in a specially designed weighted casing and anchor it within the trench. Then the trench will be backfilled. Due to the nature of the works, the equipment that is required and for the safety of the divers it is only possible to carry out the works with a full river closure.
The flow gauge is a vitally important piece of equipment. It allows us to manage the river effectively in both high and low flow events. The data is also used by third parties such as Thames Water to help them effectively abstract water from the river to provide drinking water to our homes.
