Details of the application

Radical Energy Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for 3 licences.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a transfer licence to abstract (take) water from the Dane Brook at Upper Hulme, Leek, Staffordshire at National Grid Reference (NGR) SK 01232 61002 to transfer it to the Dane Brook at NGR SK 01220 60921. Abstraction will take place all year for the purpose of heat and hydro-electric power generation.

Radical Energy Limited has also applied for an impounding licence to obstruct or impede the flow of the Dane Brook at Upper Hulme at NGR SK 01222 60922. By modifying the existing weir using an adjustable sluice beneath Upper Hulme Mill water will be impounded to facilitate abstraction as notified below.

Radical Energy Limited has also applied for a full licence to abstract (take) water from the Dane Brook immediately upsteam of the existing weir beneath Upper Hulme Mill at NGR SK 01222 60926.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

  • 720 cubic metres per hour
  • 17,280 cubic metres per day
  • 4,131,216 cubic metres per year

At an instantaneous rate not exceeding 200 litres per second.

Abstraction will take place all year for the purpose of hydro-electric power generation. All water will be returned to the Dane Brook at NGR SK 01220 60921.
