This publication reports the findings from a qualitative study conducted in 2022 to explore how the haulage sector has responded to recent border disruption.

The study involved 27 UK haulage company managers who were interviewed from March 2022 to June 2022. The findings provide in-depth insights, views and behaviours, but they are not representative of all UK haulage companies.

The aim of the research was to understand the main challenges to route planning, including:

  • the impact of EU Exit and the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic
  • how haulage companies decide on route and crossing planning into and from the UK
  • how flexible companies are at times of border disruption

These findings are potentially of interest to the industry and will help to inform the Department for Transport’s future plans on how best to support the sector.

The study was carried out by Thinks Insight & Strategy (formerly known as Britain Thinks) on behalf of DfT.
