The statement sets out the Committee’s early scientific considerations on the use of modern biotechnology in food and feed, and the need for a proportionate regulatory framework. It draws on discussions held by the ACNFP Products of Genetic Technologies subcommittee and the full committee to advise on a two-tier safety assessment of PBOs. The statement reflects areas of scientific consensus at the time and provides advice to support the Food Standards Agency in developing an appropriate, evidence‑based approach to the regulation and safety assessment of precision bred organisms.
