Details

This page publishes a statement from the Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes (ACNFP) on precision bred organisms, issued in July 2023. The statement was developed to support the Food Standards Agency (FSA) in its policy development for precision breeding and sets out scientific considerations on the types of information and evidence needed for the safety assessment of precision bred organisms (PBOs) intended for food and feed use. The Products of Genetic Technologies (PGT) Subcommittee supported the ACNFP with this work, building on earlier advice for a proportionate, two‑tier approach to assessment based on novelty, composition and potential safety concerns. The statement addresses the third phase of work commissioned by the FSA, focusing on the determination of appropriate data requirements for PBO safety assessments. It presents two evidence‑based model options, reflecting different levels of scrutiny depending on risk, and outlines how information on novelty, exposure and potential hazards should be considered proportionately. The document provides the scientific rationale for these approaches and supports further development of policy in this area.
