This is an update on the Parole Board’s performance for the 2019-2020 reporting year, which started on 1 April 2019 and ends on 31 March 2020.

It is split into quarterly updates, with Quarter 1 (April - June) and Quarter 2 (July to October) shown below.

Quarter 3 and 4 will be posted in due course.

All figures are correct for this period, which ended on 31 October 2019

  • Forty applications for a Parole Board decision to be reconsidered were made since the ‘reconsideration mechanism’ was launched in July 2019.

  • By the end of October 2019, 1906 Parole Board decision summaries had been issued to victims and the public since they were introduced in May 2018.

  • There was an increase of 22% in the amount of cases the Parole Board was managing (known as the active caseload), compared to the same quarter the year before. From July to September 2018, the Parole Board had 7104 cases, and from July to September 2019 it had 8641.

  • 211 people serving Imprisonment for Public Protection were released.

  • 46 complaints were received.

  • 7 Freedom of Information requests were received.

  • There were 11% fewer deferrals on the day of a Parole Board oral hearing, compared to the same quarter in 2018. 17.5% of cases were deferred on the day from July to September 2018 and 6.5% from July to September 2019.

  • 48 new Parole Board members were appointed in September 2019.

  • By April 2020, there will be 29 more Parole Board members from a Black Asian or Minority Ethnic (BAME) background than there were before a recruitment campaign for new members was held in early 2019.

  • The average release rate for this period was 52%.

  • By the end of June 2019, 1532 Parole Board decision summaries had been issued to victims and the public since they were introduced in May 2018.

  • There was an increase of 29% in the amount of cases the Parole Board was managing (known as the active caseload), compared to the same quarter the year before. From April to June 2018, the Parole Board had 6824 cases, and from April to June 2019 it had 8641.

  • 216 people serving Imprisonment for Public Protection were released.

  • 16 complaints were received.

  • There were 8.5% fewer deferrals on the day of a Parole Board oral hearing, compared to the same quarter the year before. 15% of cases were deferred on the day in April to June 2018 and 6.5% in April to June 2019.
