| Summary | On 27 February 2026, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reported that according to authorities in Spain, a confirmed human case of swine influenza A(H1N1)v was detected during February 2026 in Catalonia. Media sources report (in Spanish) the case to be an 83 year old with chronic health conditions (in Spanish) who had visited a hospital on 30 January 2026 for another illness and did not present with flu-like symptoms. The case has since recovered. The source of infection is unknown. The case and their contacts reported no exposure to pigs or contaminated environments. Human-to-human transmission has not been reported, and no further cases have been identified. All contacts were asymptomatic during their surveillance period and tested samples returned negative. Sporadic cases of swine influenza A(H1N1)v have been reported in Spain. This is the fourth case of swine influenza A(H1N1)v reported in Spain since 2009, with the last reported case detected in Catalonia (in Spanish) during January 2024. The ECDC assess the likelihood of further transmission of swine influenza A(H1N1)v in humans linked to this detection to be very low. |
