Supporting governance, education and culture: objectives 2017 to 2018

Published 16 February 2018

1. Overview

The UK’s Aid Strategy sets out how the Government is using its aid budget to tackle global challenges. It highlights the government’s global efforts to defeat poverty, tackle instability, and create prosperity in developing countries. The FCO helps to deliver this strategy by supporting governance, promoting tolerance, developing education, and cultivating relationships with and between key individuals, institutions and organisations.

2. FCO objectives on supporting Governance, Education and Culture

Striving for a secure and prosperous world will help us achieve a secure and prosperous UK. We work in collaboration with other countries to preserve, promote and protect our shared interests across HMG’s objectives under the National Security Strategy and the FCO’s policy priorities. Working across a wide range of subject areas and in partnership with other countries and institutions, the UK seeks to build understanding and strengthen countries’ governance and education to help tackle global challenges and to grow global prosperity.

3. Official Development Assistance and Governance, Education and Culture

The UN Sustainable Development goals recognise that economic development, good governance, job creation, peace and security, and the fight against climate change are vital to long term development. Collaborating with countries to support this work and to tackle these global challenges assists countries with their overall development.

4. Governance, Education and Culture project objectives

In support of the above, workstreams under this programme share understanding, and help build capacity to combat global challenges. They use the UK’s expertise, language, and our strong democratic values and the diversity of our society to help achieve this. In particular, workstreams aim to:

  • improve understanding, develop cooperation, and increase capacity on governance
  • develop cooperation and capacity in education to aid development, build skills and grow talent. This includes building links between Universities in the UK and overseas, as well as academic assistance to develop educational strategies and curriculums, and the sharing of best practice. It also includes English language training, professional skills training and support to scholarship and fellowships (with the exception of Chevening Scholarships)
  • build professional capability and drive global prosperity through the support of young entrepreneurs, academics, and future leaders
  • counter extremist ideology through building partnerships with all those opposed to extremism and supporting resilience through critical thinking and the promotion of tolerant and cohesive communities
