Multilateral Reforms and Elections Programme summary 2022 to 2023

Published 30 March 2023

Overview

The Multilateral Reform and Elections allocation of the International Programme underpins UK commitment to the international system and engagement with multilateral institutions, shaping them to better deliver our priorities and uphold our values. The total allocation in 2022 to 2023 was £1.41 million non-ODA.

Objectives

For 2022 to 2023, funding was allocated to teams in the FCDO United Nations and Multilateral Department, the UK Mission to the UN in New York and the UK Mission to the UN in Vienna. As well as multilateral commitments in the Integrated Review, activity was required to contribute to the following goals:

  • advance UK government peace, security and development objectives through greater alignment and effectiveness of UN political, peacekeeping and development activity
  • increase UK government influence in key UN and other multilateral institutions through securing more senior positions and governance decisions in our favour

Projects help to support these objectives through strengthening particular aspects of the UN, seeking to improve the talent pipeline of UK nationals in the UN and supporting UK nationals already working in the multilateral system. Examples for 2022 to 2023 include:

  • a project to support a UN Special Adviser to implement the Strategic Action Plan on Addressing Racism and Promoting Dignity. This resource provides strategic advice to the Secretary-General and oversees the full implementation of the Plan
  • a supply chain management project that aims to strengthen the capacity of the UN to enhance support to the peacebuilding effort and to contribute more directly to the Sustainable Development Goals. This is with a focus on increasing supply chain resilience and capacity, effective environmental stewardship, and improved coordination in peace operations
  • an expansion of the UK multilateral talent pipeline, including the UK funded UN Junior Professional Officers programme and support for UK priority election candidates
  • a UK-hosted Women in Leadership seminar in Vienna to provide female UK nationals currently working within the Vienna-based international organisations with the necessarily skills to progress to leadership positions
