FOI release

Number of SIA licensed operatives by region

Published 27 November 2020

1. Request

I have started a security company where I have to use SIA registered personnel. For myself to gain customers I need to ensure I have SIA registered personnel in areas to offer a service.

Can I request to get figures on where SIA registered personnel are located around the regions (i.e: Buckinghamshire estimated 300 registered SIA personnel)? This will allow me to target areas where I have a greater number of SIA registered personnel to gain business.

1.1 Clarification

‘SIA registered personnel’ means SIA licensed operatives (people who hold an SIA licence).

The information I seek is the estimated number of SIA registered personnel in the following areas:

  • Buckinghamshire
  • Berkshire
  • Hertfordshire
  • Essex
  • Surrey
  • Kent
  • Sussex
  • Oxfordshire
  • Bedfordshire
  • Dorset
  • Hampshire
  • Wiltshire
  • Gloucestershire
  • Cambridgeshire
  • Northamptonshire
  • Leicestershire
  • Lincolnshire
  • Nottinghamshire
  • Derbyshire
  • Staffordshire
  • West Midlands
  • Warwickshire
  • Herefordshire
  • Worcestershire
  • Shropshire
  • Norfolk
  • Suffolk
  • Cheshire
  • Merseyside
  • Manchester
  • Lancashire
  • Cumbria
  • South Yorkshire
  • West Yorkshire
  • North Yorkshire
  • Tyne & Wear
  • Devon

2. Response

I can confirm that we do hold the information you requested.

Please see attached a spreadsheet containing the total number of active licence holders by area. The data is correct as of 8 September 2020.

We use data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to match and define geographical areas on our data sets. We believe that the geographical areas best suited to your request are a combination of counties and local authorities.

The Office of National Statistics utilises a classification of “pseudo” for some counties. Where this is indicated in the data, we suggest the use of the ‘Local Authority’ column for reference. Pseudo codes are used for the following areas: Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Channel Islands and Isle of Man, English Unitary Authority (UA), English Metropolitan District (MD), English London Borough (LB).

Where the description in the data is “No match found to ONS”, it refers to postcodes that have not matched to the ONS Postcode Directory database.
