Norwich City Council has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a full licence to abstract water from the River Wensum at National Grid Reference (NGR) TG 22806 08871.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

  • 103.58 cubic metres an hour
  • 2,486 cubic metres a day
  • 907,390 cubic metres a year
  • At an instantaneous rate not exceeding 28.77 litres per second
  • between 1 April and 31 March inclusive in each year.

The water will be used for a heat pump to supply heating to a housing development. Further details are: The abstraction is non-consumptive and all water will be returned after passing through the heat exchanger to the River Wensum at National Grid Reference TG 22838 08861 approximately 30m from the point of abstraction. The applicant will install 1mm steel mesh on the abstraction inlet and discharge outlet to prevent damaging eels, elvers and other fish. The applicant has also applied for a Discharge Consent Licence.
