Details

This document outlines the projects granted under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 during 2016 with a primary purpose of protection of basic research, sensory organs.

The following projects were granted:

  • signal detection in auditory cortex of the mouse (cancer, genetics, epigenetics)

  • neuronal communication in fish (zebrafish, vision, olfaction, neuron, synapse)

  • genetics and etiology of eye disease (blindness, cornea, lens, stem cells)

  • cell to cell signalling in skin disorders and wound healing (skin inflammation, connexin, wound healing, epidermal dysplasia)

  • the circuit mechanisms of auditory processing (hearing loss, ageing, tinnitus, auditory system)

  • mapping the functional architecture of vision (zebrafish, topography, retina, vision, mapping)

  • studying the retinal response to depression (retinal response to depression)

  • the retinal pigment epithelium in health and disease (retina, diabetes, age-related macular degeneration)

  • understanding vision, developing therapies (retina, retinitis pigmentosa, sight, melanopsin, vision)

  • strategies for the restoration of sight in retinal dystrophies. (retinal degeneration, stem cells, saffron, subretinal transplantation, intravitreal transplantation)

  • the neural basis of sound perception (hearing, sensory cortex, auditory cortex, multisensory)

  • exploring the role of inflammation in common eye diseases (eye, blindness, inflammation)

  • genes and environments that influence behaviour (genetics, behaviour, smell, intellectual disability)

  • development of novel therapy strategies for skin diseases (skin diseases, therapy, genetic disease)

  • developing gene therapy for glaucoma (glaucoma, gene therapy, IOP)

  • brain mechanisms of listening and learning (auditory; hearing; mice; neurons; perception)

  • inflammatory diseases of the brain and eye (multiple sclerosis; uveitis, inflammation, vasculature)

  • lateral line and hair cell function in zebrafish (hair cells, zebrafish, development, neurons, regeneration)

  • regulation of mesendoderm formation in vertebrates (gene regulation, zebrafish)
