Guidance

Non-agricultural geographical indications (NAGIs)

Published 26 November 2025

The IPO will administer the scheme in NI. We will update this page when we can accept applications.

NI applicants to the EU scheme

Once operational in NI, NI producers will be able to apply to the EU scheme via the IPO.

GB applicants to the EU scheme

Producers in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) wanting to protect their NAGIs under the EU scheme will need to apply directly to the EU Intellectual Property Office.

Protecting NAGIs across the UK

UK producers can continue to protect their NAGIs in the UK (including in NI) by applying to register a collective or certification trade mark.

Existing users of a registered product name

If another producer applies to register a product name you’re currently using, you will need to stop using the name unless either:

  • you have trade mark protection for it
  • your product meets the registered product specification

The EUIPO may allow you a transitional period to give you time to phase out using the name. To be eligible, you must oppose the NAGI application at the EUIPO.

Where to go for more information

You can visit the EUIPO’s GI Hub or the European Commission’s website for further information.

You can also email the IPO if you have any queries about this new scheme at nonagriGIs@ipo.gov.uk

GI schemes for agricultural products, food and drink

This new EU scheme doesn’t impact the existing EU or UK GI schemes for agricultural products, food and drink. You should contact the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) if you have any queries about these schemes.
