NNB Generation Company Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for three Water Resources licences.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of these applications in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The applications are related to a habitat creation scheme, on land near Aldhurst Farm, Leiston, Suffolk and comprise of the following:

NPS/WR/017466

An application for a licence to abstract water from four newly created groundwater basins at National Grid References (NGR): TM 45113 63550, TM 45340 63429,TM 45314 63421 and TM 45432 63474 and transfer it to the waste water treatment works drain at TM 45432 63474 without intervening use.

The application is to transfer water as follows:

  • Up to 1,350 cubic metres a day
  • Up to 346,350 cubic metres a year

The transfer may take place all year round. The groundwater basins are formed from excavations into sands and gravels and will provide the new habitat. The water levels in each basin will be retained by a series of impoundments.

NPS/WR/017467

An application for a licence to obstruct or impede the flow from excavations into sands and gravels at NGR: TM 45113 63550, TM 45340 63429, TM 45314 63421 and TM 45432 63474.

Water will be transferred through a series of four 750 millimetre concrete pipes at the outflow of each groundwater basin, each obstructed or impeded by stop boards. The impounding structures will each include an eel pass.

An application for a full licence to abstract water from a Crag borehole at NGR: TM 45050 63234.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

  • 37.44 cubic metres an hour
  • 900 cubic metres a day
  • 27,000 cubic metres a year
  • All year

The water may be used to support the levels in the groundwater basins during dry periods. The water availability results from a licence trade with spray irrigation licence number 7/35/03/*G/0049.

The licence shall be viewed as granted, unless the Secretary of State, either as a result of any representations made about the proposal or otherwise, instructs or asks for an application to be made to them.
