Wellbeing: introduction to subjective wellbeing datasets

Introduction to work done by the Office for National Statistics and the Cabinet Office on national wellbeing.

In 2010 the Prime Minister launched the National Wellbeing Programme to “start measuring our progress as a country, not just by how our economy is growing, but by how our lives are improving; not just by our standard of living, but by our quality of life”.

Since then the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has held a national debate on ‘what matters to you?’ (pdf, 1.13 MB), which led to the development and publication of a measurement framework comprising 10 domains and 38 measures of wellbeing – this includes the things that people have told us matter to them and to their quality of life.
