National Trust (Renewable Energy) Limited of Heelis, Kemble Drive, Swindon, Wiltshire, SN2 2NA has applied to the Environment Agency for 2 licences.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application (in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006).

The application is for a full licence to abstract water from the Nether Beck at Wasdale, Cumbria, CA20 1EX, at National Grid Reference (NGR) NY 15994 07470.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

  • 594 cubic metres an hour
  • 14,256 cubic metres a day
  • 3,136,320 cubic metres a year
  • at a maximum instantaneous rate of 165 litres per second

All year.

The water will be used for hydropower generation with a Turgo type turbine and will be returned to the Nether Beck at NGR NY 16100 06696.

The same applicant has also applied to the Environment Agency for a licence to obstruct or impede the flow of the Nether Beck at NGR NY 15994 07470.

The impounding works are to facilitate the abstraction of water for hydropower generation.

Further details are: the proposal includes the provision of a minimum prescribed flow and flow split to help maintain the ecology of the deprived river channel. The intake to the turbine will include a 2 millimetre coanda type fish screen combined with a 25 millimetre bar type fish screen at the outfall. The proposal is located within the Derwent and West Cumbria CAMS area and will provisionally be time-limited until 31st March 2026.

The installation is intended to have an installed capacity of about 100 kilowatts which is projected to provide up to 536 megawatt hours of renewable electricity per year.
