Details of the application

National Trust (Renewable Energy) Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for two licences.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application, in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The first application is for a full licence to abstract (take) water from Watendlath Beck at Derwent, Cumbria at National Grid Reference (NGR) NY 27547 16379.

The application is to abstract water all year at the following rates:

  • 2,520 cubic metres an hour
  • 60,480 cubic metres a day
  • 13,305,600 cubic metres a year

At an instantaneous rate not exceeding 700 litres per second, all year.

The water will be used to generate hydro-electric power (HEP) before being discharged downstream of the weir at National Grid Reference (NGR) NY 27494 16490 thereby creating a 140m depleted reach.

The second application is for a licence to impede the flow of Watendlath Beck at Derwent, Cumbria at NGR NY 27547 16379 by installing a stone faced concrete intake structure to facilitate abstraction.
