MSN 1892 (M) The workboat code - Edition 2

This notice replaces previous Codes and Notices concerning newbuild small workboats, and pilot boats.

This MSN has been withdrawn as Workboat Code Edition 3 has superseded Workboat Code Edition 2 which should not be used for certification of new vessels.

Existing vessels may continue to use Workboat Code Edition 2 until their transition period concludes.

This Merchant Shipping Notice (MSN) announces the latest amendment of the MCA publication “The Safety of Small Workboats and Pilot Boats – A Code of Practice” (also known as the “Brown Code”), this revision will be known as Workboat Code Edition 2. The Workboat Code Edition 2 is underpinned by the Merchant Shipping (Small Workboats and Pilot Boats) Regulations 1998, as amended, and is given affect by the provisions of Regulation 3(1).

The changes arising from the publication of Workboat Code Edition 2 apply to new vessels, constructed on or after 31 December 2018. This MSN describes how this amendment of the Code is applicable to other small workboats and pilot boats certificated under the Workboat Code Industry Working Group Technical Standard and how this amendment of the Code affects other existing vessels.
