This Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been agreed between the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB), the British Transport Police (BTP) and the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) and covers England and Wales; Scotland is the subject of a separate MoU.

In cases where BTP may not immediately be involved (for example accidents and incidents on heritage railway networks or tramways) Home Office police will apply principles similar to those contained in this MoU.
