Monitoring public spaces through the use of CCTV
Published 17 February 2022
1. Request
I have been working for [redacted] at [redacted] for the last year. The managers are making us use CCTV on site without any training and they keep telling me that I don’t need a CCTV licence. The CCTV I have to watch is on public space: where the main road is, not part of [redacted]. If this is breaking the law please do let me know in an email so that I can show them and get some kind of action taken on this.
2. Response
Please be advised that the Freedom of Information Act gives a general right of access to all types of recorded information held by public authorities. We are not required to create new information to respond to a request, or give a judgement or opinion that is not already recorded. As your request is asking for an opinion it falls outside the scope of the Act.
The SIA would like to know more and ask that you report your concerns using our report a crime or concern page. This information will be treated as intelligence, and we will investigate this with reference to the Private Security Industry Act 2001 (PSIA) and initiate any enforcement action we feel appropriate. We would not however be able to feed back on the actions we take.
I hope that the information I have provided above is sufficient to address your concerns.
